The Ragroof Players present a newly streamlined, easily tourable, and highly affordable version of their hit street theatre show, Shall We Dance? Available for booking indoors or outdoors.

As the band strikes up and the glitterball twirls, Shall We Dance? Encore! takes its audience on a whirlwind journey through dancehalls and ballrooms of days gone by. Watch and wonder as each new dance craze unfolds – from the frenetic flappers of the Charleston era through the glamorous Tango dancers from the heyday of Ballroom Dance, to the post-war fling that was Swing and finally the end-of-an-era Rock n Roll Stroll.

Based on the reminiscences of older people and their memories of dancehalls and (often long-lost) dance partners, Shall We Dance? was created by Ragroof Theatre in 2006 for a cast of nine, and has toured extensively since.

The Ragroof Players now offer Shall We Dance? Encore! – a new, streamlined version of the show that can be presented outdoors at street theatre festivals or community events, or indoors in any venue with dancefloor (rather than stage) space, such as dancehalls, ballrooms, Spiegeltents, or village halls. This version of the show still packs a big punch: an hour-long almost-wordless show, performed with great gusto by a company of six.

Shall We Dance? Encore! retains all the key elements of the original production: a finely-honed cast of dancehall characters playing out their dreams and fears; gorgeous vintage costumes; original dancehall tunes weaved into a specially-composed soundscape; and of course those authentic dance steps, worked into a delightful melee of physical storytelling.

But without the large set, the costs of touring the show are greatly reduced, and the show is far more versatile, and adaptable to many different settings.

Shall We Dance? Encore! can be presented as a stand-alone one-hour show (indoors or outdoors) or in tandem with one of our famous Ragroof Tea Dances, making a fantastically good value three-hour package of entertainment and participation. The show can also be accompanied by community workshops in social dance, reminiscence projects, or community group involvement in the show.
