‘A beautiful and touching production that speaks across the generations - long may it continue to be seen!'
Roxie Curry | Shoreditch Audiences
'Ragroof Theatre's 'Shall We Dance?' was a delightful climax to the National Theatre's 2006 Watch This Space season. Witty, moving, energetic and well executed, it reiterated Ragroof's reputation for creating unusual outdoor theatre’
Angus MacKechnie | Watch This Space Producer
Shall We Dance? Encore! takes its audience on a whirlwind journey through dancehalls and ballrooms of days gone by. Watch and wonder as each new dance craze unfolds – from the frenetic flappers of the Charleston era through the glamorous Tango dancers from the heyday of Ballroom Dance, to the post-war fling that was Swing and finally the end-of-an-era Rock n Roll Stroll.
Shall We Dance? Encore! features a diverse and eccentric cast of characters. The audience is transported back to a time when the intricate rituals of courtship were played out on the dancefloor. Composed soundscapes entwine with dancehall favourites, interspersed with recorded memories, to deliver a memorable soundtrack for this visual feast – a dynamic blend of physical theatre, popular dance, and comic performance.
Originally created in 2006 by Ragroof Theatre, under the direction of Luan Blake, with choreography by Dorothy Max Prior, the show was inspired and informed by older people’s memories of the dancehall era, and their (often long-lost) dance partners. After touring to most of the major street arts festivals in the UK, the show was substantially reworked in 2010, and is now presented by a cast of six actor-dancers.
Shall We Dance? Encore! can be performed in a number of different settings, indoor or outdoor. Suitable for outdoor presentation in street arts and community festivals; or indoors in a dancehall setting – be it Spiegeltent, village hall or ballroom!
